Opened in 2000, the Institute has emerged as the area leader in cancer
care, offering the community comprehensive diagnostic and treatment
services, as well as preventive health care opportunities, education,
and access to some of the latest advances in clinical research.
Most importantly, The Cancer Institute at Alexian Brothers provides
holistic care focusing on the physical, emotional, psychological and
spiritual needs of each patient and family member.
Early diagnosis is promoted through
• Screening exams
• Cutting-edge diagnostic technology, including CT scanning for lung
cancer and molecular diagnostic testing
• Genetic screening
For comforting reassurance, breast cancer patients are assigned a staff
coordinator who works with them and their physicians from diagnosis through
recovery.
The Cancer Institute at Alexian Brothers offers state-of-the-art medical,
radiation and surgical treatment of cancer in inpatient and outpatient
settings, emphasizing multidisciplinary care during the entire process,
from diagnosis to treatment and follow-up care.
As part of its effort to diagnose and treat cancer as effectively as
possible, The Cancer Institute at Alexian Brothers was one of the first
in the Chicago area to have a Positive Emission Tomography (PET) scanner.
The Institute also offers innovative therapies, including photodynamic
therapy and radioimmunotherapy, as well as alternative and complementary
therapies.
It is one of the area’s largest oncology research programs, and
it is linked to national cooperative protocols, giving patients access
to the latest treatments. The Cancer Institute at Alexian Brothers participates
in both prevention and treatment clinical trials for virtually all types
of cancer and conducts in-house research studies in a variety of areas
including breast brachytherapy.
Here patients, even from surrounding hospitals, and family will find
community-sponsored educational classes focusing on wellness, life
management programs, counseling and self-help groups.
The Life Enrichment Center also offers all of the following free of
charge:
• A cancer information library with over 700 books, videos and music
CDs, and two computers, one of which is linked to The Cancer Help Institute
• Boutique services including hair/wig fittings and cosmetic specialists
• Programs and events for family members and caregivers
• Special events for patients, families and the community
• Support services including pastoral care, social work services and
nutritional counseling
• A chapel
The Cancer Institute at Alexian Brothers sponsors educational programs
aimed at members of the professional community and features subjects
such as innovative cancer treatment, chemotherapy, clinical trials, nutrition
and psychosocial and spiritual concerns.
