A 750-year old history of The Power to Heal

When the bubonic plague killed one of every three people in medieval Europe, even family members would flee the victims. Yet, a community of compassionate men stayed behind risking their lives to nurse the sick and bury the dead. They became known as the Alexian Brothers.

For over seven centuries this Catholic religious order has been caring for the sick, the poor, the elderly and the neglected. Over time, the ministry has changed to meet the expanding healthcare needs of people, but its foundation of holistic healthcare for the emotional, spiritual and physical well being of the patient remains in force today.

While many religious communities try to support hospital networks of unwieldy geographical range, the Alexian Brothers have concentrated their hospital network to one concentrated geographical area: the Northwest suburbs of Chicago. Here residents will find four hospitals and eight Clinical Institutes and Areas of Expertise staffed with 6,000 doctors, nurses, administrators and support staff providing word-class care and compassion.

Today, you will still find many of the Alexian Brothers intricately involved with the health network in various capacities from nursing to technology to administration. Above all, they remind all personnel of the daily need for compassion, dignity, care of the poor, holism and partnership.
